Getting Started.

From install to your first conversation — about five minutes. The wearable companion is still in development; today, getting started means installing the iOS app and granting it the permissions it needs.

1

Download the iOS app

Install The Thing on your iPhone (iOS 17+). The app is the product — it runs voice conversations, manages your account, and connects to Apple HealthKit, Calendar, Reminders, HomeKit, Contacts, and Shazam.

2

Sign in and subscribe

Create an account or sign in with the email you used to join the waitlist. Start your 30-day free trial. After that, billing is $5/month plus metered usage (most users $3–$10/mo total).

3

Grant permissions

On first launch the app walks you through iOS permissions — Microphone, HealthKit, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notifications, and (optionally) HomeKit and Location. You choose what to share. You can change any of these later in iOS Settings.

4

Connect your services

Open Settings inside the app and link Spotify, Gmail, Google Calendar via OAuth. These are optional — the app works without them, but they unlock more tool calls ("play something chill", "what's on my calendar", "summarize my unread email").

5

Start talking

Tap the voice button and just talk. Ask for the weather, play music, log a meal, set a reminder, place a phone call, book a restaurant — the AI runs real tools server-side. When the wearable companion ships, this same experience becomes hands-free.

Tips for the best experience.

The wearable device is in active hardware development and is not yet shipping. The iOS app is the product today; the wearable will pair to it when ready.
Grant HealthKit permissions if you want health features — the app reads/writes via Apple HealthKit.
Speak naturally. You don't need a wake word.
Tools can take a few seconds to run — booking a restaurant or browsing a site server-side is real work, not a canned response.
The more you talk to it, the more it remembers — preferences, people, routines, all stored under your account in Firestore. You can view and delete memories anytime in the app.
